Why I built it
We have an above ground pool. One day my wife asked why we didn't just put in a proper in-ground one, and what that would cost. I said I had no idea, and that I'd find out.
That turned into hours. The problem wasn't that the information was hidden, it was that there was too much of it and none of it lined up. What a pool costs depends on how it's built, and most companies only build one or two types, so nobody could give me a straight comparison. I ended up contacting three separate builders and collecting three quotes just to work out what the real range was.
That's a lot of research and a lot of phone calls to answer a question that started as curiosity. Nobody should have to line up three sales conversations to find out whether something is even in their budget.
So I built the version I wanted at the start. Design the pool, see a real range, no email, no phone calls, no commitment to anything. When you're ready to talk to a builder you'll be ready, and you'll know roughly what the numbers should look like before you walk in.
What it doesn't do
This is an estimate, not a quote. No calculator can see your yard. Slope, access, soil, drainage, permits and local labour rates all move the real number, which is exactly why the tool shows a range instead of pretending to know. Use it to find out whether you're in the right neighbourhood, then get real quotes.
Who made it
I'm Mike Mulik, a designer in Toronto. I build free tools under the name doubleM, which is just my initials and an old nickname that stuck. Usually I make them because I ran into the problem myself and couldn't find anything that explained it simply.
